A visit to great-grandmother's farm.

February 21-22, 2009

Photobucket

In April of 1889, thousands of people gathered together in the incredibly small town of Guthrie, OK to prepare themselves to run for land. Each person could run to and stake a claim on 160 acre sections of open land. Your great-great-great-grandfather Cheatham Mears wanted to run, but was unable to make it due to your great-great-great-grandmother (Mary Katherine) being close to the birth of their 6th child. Once the child was born, and they were able to travel once again, they moved on to that area of Oklahoma. In September of that year, he traded a wagon and a team of horses (or mules, not sure which) with a young man for one of those plots of land.

One of the requirements for keeping this land was that you had to live on it and make improvements for at least 5 years before it was officially yours. He and his sons began building soon after acquiring the land. They worked hard on the house. The modern conveniences we know today for building anything were not available; nor the manpower. They would take their wagon/cart to where the railroad delivered the lumber and cart it back to their land. The entire house was built by their hands alone. In 1899, they finally finished it. It consisted of the kitchen, the one downstairs bedroom, the front living room, and the entire upstairs.

Sometime later, your great-great-grandparents Noel & Kessie Jacobs bought the land and house from your ggg-grandfather for $300. They lived there for many years. They had 8 children; 6 boys and 2 girls. After your gg-grandparents passed away, different people lived there off and on. At some point the brothers decided to sell most of the land to a local man there. He bought 155 acres which left them with 5 and the house.

Years later in 1980 (I was 4), your great-grandmother (Katherine Jacobs Arthur Cross) and her husband (Hershel Cross) bought the 5 acres with the house from the rest of the family. They renovated the old house adding a few rooms and a basement but leaving most of the original house in its original state. This is where she currently lives and where we went to visit her. When we were kids we used to play ‘ship’ on top of the old storm cellar.

The old storm cellar

As generations grow up and old pass away, stories get forgotten. Everett, I wanted to make sure that you knew the history behind that land and the part it played in the lives of your ancestors. Many of us wish we could put the original 160 acres back together, but it is not currently an option. I’m not sure who will own it by the time you are old enough to want to know all of this, but just in case I’m not around to tell it to you…

Happy 9th Anniversary to us!

Photos from our move to Fort Worth 9/5/01
Look how young (and thin) we are!! :)

February 26th....

How we celebrated our special evening together:
-We took Everett to swim lessons at the Y.
-We went over birthday "stuff" for Everett's birthday party.
-I sort of watched Survivor on television, while playing with Ev on the livingroom floor.
-You drove to the grocery store for groceries and stuff for dinner.
-You cooked one of our favorite dinners (cheese enchiladas & homemade salsa, yum!)

Some would say a rather typical and uneventful evening.
I say, it was perfect.

Thanks for being my partner, my love, and my life.

Swimming Lessons!

Everett started swim lessons today!
He, along with 8 other moms and babies, had so much fun.

They played:

"splash Mama in the face"...

kick the water...

lay on your back...
,

grab for toys...

blow bubbles...

jump into the water...

climb up the ladder/out to the side,

going under water...

...all while singing lots and lots of nursery songs.
While Deona swam with Everett, I watched and took lots of pictures.
His instructor was really nice and worked really well with the little ones.

Deona was without proper fitting swimsuit, so she was the only geek in a t-shirt.
Well, I guess I should add, i was the only geek-parent with camera in hand. :)

Looking forward to 10 more lessons and watching our baby boy become more confident and excited about swimming.

9 months old

Dear Everett,

Wow, you are nine months old! How did that happen?

Talking/Jabbering
You’ve been very vocal and testing just how loud you can be; specifically in the car and while Mommy is on the phone. Though you haven’t learned any new words this month, you understand quite a few (including sign language):
-Milk / Leche
-Diaper
-Book
-Up
-More
-Eat
-No
-Sit down

You also understand sentences, like:
-“Where’s kitty-kitty?” or “where’s Princey?” you look towards their usual places.
-You know what to do when we say, “high-five!”
-You smile and look at Mommy’s nose when she says, “Where’s Mommy’s nose?”
-You laugh and crawl away from Mommy, as fast as you can, when she says, “I’m going to get you!” Or “No!”
Crawling / Climbing / Walking
You are a speed crawler and you’re standing on your own, for well over a minute now (unless you’re tired). This past week, you learned how to lift your right knee and climb up on the little, yellow, plastic chair at Grammy and Grampy’s. Today, you even stood on it to reach for Grampy’s soda bottle. Stinker!
Sleep
This month you’ve had difficulty sleeping through the night. Bedtime is at 9:00 p.m. but you wake us at 3:00 a.m. for a bottle and diaper change; then again at 8:15 a.m. You’re also waking up earlier on weekends. Your Mama doesn’t appreciate the earlier wake-up time, since she cares/attends to you on those days that she doesn’t have to get up early for work.
Naps
Nap times are around 10:15 a.m. and 2:15 and typically are for an hour. Unfortunately, you’ve become a light sleeper so Grampy doesnt take naps with you anymore, otherwise, he'll wake you up with his snoring (and you'll be in a bad mood).
Poor Grampy.

Playtime
Your favorite toys this month are:
A push-behind shopping cart we got you for Valentines Day
and an “Elmo” airplane and dump truck from Grammy and Grampy.

Teething
You have one new tooth! Bottom right (3 total so far) and it looks like there is another tooth coming in bottom-left. You continue to have a hard time with teething; we’re giving you baby T.ylenol as needed to help soothe the pain. Recently, you’ve been chewing on everything; including books, link-a-doos, paper, leaves, sticks, furniture, Mommy’s fingers...
Meals
You went through a growth spurt this month; it seemed as if you were eating/drinking a lot more than usual and then it just stopped. There are some days where I wonder how you manage to have so much energy on so little food. We really saw a decrease in your appetite this month, which caused your Mommy to worry all month long. We’re guessing its because you graze throughout the day. This week, we’ve reduced the number of bottles you are getting, so that you are hungry at mealtimes.
You’re now getting a bottle (6-8 oz) every 6 hours plus:
Breakfast - bowl of oatmeal mixed with fruit, like apples or peaches
Lunch - A jar of vegetables (stage 2), plus something else like cottage cheese or a slice of cheese
Snack - Graham cracker, veggie puffs, fruit or vegetable.
Dinner - Jar of veggies and a fruit jar
Rarely will you finish a whole jar in one sitting. You’ve gotten pretty good with your pincher grasp. Hooray. AND…you’re officially not using a “sussy” (pacifier), any longer HOORAY! Your pediatrician suggested 6 months but it’s taken an additional 3 months.
Physical
According to our home scale, you weigh 20.5 pounds.
You wear 12 month clothes and still wear a size 3 diaper.
Your hair is a reddish-brown and has grown a lot this month; you even have a few curls in the back now. We think it’s time for your first haircut, but your Grampy, Grammy and aunt Tammy think we should let it grow until you have more curls. We’ll see. :)
Your eyes are still blue and we continue to get lots and lots of compliments about how beautiful your eyes are.
(Readers: click on picture for a close-up of Everett's gorgeous eyes). :)

One more thing…
You love other kids! You love to watch kids in restaurants, at the park and you especially love to play with your cousins Matthew and Jordan. It seems that you enjoy slobbering and smothering your older cousin, Jordan and you like to touch Matthew’s head. You’ll also attempt to pull Matthew's hair and gouge his eyes; i'm sure it's your way of showing him affection. Silly boy. Lately, you’ve become a sympathetic crier. When you hear a baby cry, you start crying with them. It makes your moms really sad.

Everett, being your parents gets more fun and more complex as every month passes. I still have those moments where I just can't quite believe that we actually have you. We are so blessed. You are helping both of us learn how to appreciate the present moment and not always leap into planning for the future. This is especially easy because, for the past nine months, each present moment has been an amazing and wonderful place to be.

We love you so very much and we are so proud of how you are growing and learning.

Rats?

No Rats, just an Everett.

Our little guy is having the best time using his teeth these days, all two of them.
Nothing goes unscathed; here are some of his latest "chews"...
Books:
(chew marks - top right)

(chew marks above the "C" and "I")

Dropper bottles:
We allowed Everett to hold a Tylenol and Mylecon bottle (two seperate occassions), during diaper changes; it seems giving him something to hold distracts him from flipping over. And i know what you're thinking...:"How about a toy?" Well, I've tried toys and they just don't keep him interested.
As you can see, he works really fast and pretty good at leaving his signature marks. We've moved on to a much larger dropper (with no paper labels or meds inside).

Food boxes:
Not even two minutes after putting this box in our grocery basket, Ev had chewed the top of the box. We had to tape the top closed at checkout.

Mail:
Everett received a Valentines Day card from his aunt Mary and uncle Fred today; he was so excited!

He examines closely...

just a little taste....

Yes, those are tears in his eyes, I had to take the chewed envelope away from him.

30 seconds later...
Thanks aunt Mary and uncle Fred for the sweet card, as you can see, Everett LOVED it. :)

I'm not sure if this is a phase....gosh, i hope so. I just hope he doesn't move towards biting/eating flesh. EEK!
