Sick again

Since last Monday's doctor's appointment, Everett has been on a path to feeling better. Unfortunately, he started feeling bad again on Friday night with congestion, coughing and a runny nose. Poor baby needed lots of snuggling and reassurance from his moms.
After a 4 1/2 hour nap late this afternoon, Ev woke up feeling better with lots more energy and a healthy appetite.
Feeling better, Everett takes some time to play with his toys.
Thanks Grammy for Everett's new 'jammies, they fit him perfectly.

Picking videos

Oh help us! This week, Everett's started picking his own videos out of his basket of DVD's. Everett's favorites this week? "Monster's Inc", "Thomas the Train", and "The Wiggles". We're looking forward to the next rotation of fav's.

Time for a toddler bed?

I think so. Our plan was to move the crib to his new room next weekend, then introduce the race car toddler bed in a couple of weeks. Will he wait that long before jumping out of his crib? Our fingers are crossed he will.

One week from today....

...we'll be moving! Many of you remember we sold our house in October and have been temporarily living with Don. We're considering this next move a stepping stone as Deona is in graduate school through the summer. Who knows where we might end up after our lease is up, should an opportunity arise. We're not, however, in a hurry to buy a house again anytime soon. Can you say burned? (grrrrrr!)
In the meanwhile, we'll be moving to an apartment complex that is convenient on so many levels. First and most importantly, it is across the street from the hospital where we will deliver Emilia, down the street from Deona's OB/GYN, it's close to shopping and food AND best of all, close to Grammy's apartment! How close you ask? Well, if you're standing on our patio and look to the left, you might see Grammy sitting on her patio drinking a cup of coffee. :) And to answer your next question....Yes, it was Grammys idea and she is thrilled we will be living so close.
Not shown: Floorplan includes a direct access garage, which will be very convenient for loading and unloading babies.

love, Love, LOVE this photographer's work

I've been following Kelly Smith's work via her photoblog, since before Everett was born. I absolutely adore her photographs. She's titled this photoshoot, "Sweet Baby E".
simply precious.
I wouldnt be opposed if anyone wanted to fly her down from Milwaukee to photograph our "Sweet Baby E". :)

The countdown begins....
We're 28 weeks pregnant today and officially in our THIRD trimester!!! WOOHOO!!!!

According to Babycenter baby weighs two and a quarter pounds and measures 14.8 inches from the top of her head to her heels. She can blink her eyes, which now sport lashes. With her eyesight developing, she may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. She's also developing billions of neurons in her brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

Shrinking maternity pants?

This past weekend, we went shopping for maternity pants. Apparently, Deona's have all shrunk in the dryer. :o) Tomorrow, Deona will be 28 weeks preggers, stay tuned for updates and more pictures.

Peace of mind

Well, I decided to take Everett to see our pediatrician today, for peace of mind really. In the event Everett did have RSV, we'd need to stay home and not out and about as we sometimes are. Doc confirmed Everett's lungs and ears are clear and he tested negative for RSV. She did however, give him a prescription for his nasal congestion. Whew, a close one.
Today, Everett weighed 27.6 pounds.

Coloring on our sani-sheet, while we waited for Doc.

You make me sick

Everett and I have had congestion and runny noses since Monday. It didnt prompt a visit to see the doctor since Deona and I assumed it was due to the drastic changes of weather we've had recently and also because our pediatrian recommends not going in to see her unless Ev has a high fever (101.0).
Well, on Friday we found out our nephew Matthew has a mild case of RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus). RSV is the most common germ that causes lung and airway infections in infants and young children. It is also known that RSV is HIGHLY contagious and most often children are hospitalized when they get it.
Initially Deona and I were quite concerned of this news, because we had just spent Wednesday evening with Matt, Jordan and Dondi. Even moreso, because during their time of play, Everett snatched Matthew's pacifier and chomped on it a couple of times. Luckily for Matt, Deona remembered to wash and sanitize the pacifier before returning it to him.
I also felt some concern because I sat between the dualing coughers (Matt & Everett) at dinner. :o/
This news prompted a conversation for Deona and I. We came to the conclusion, even in our best attempts to keep Everett from germs (i.e. keeping him out of daycare and away from those whom are ill), there are still endless possibilities where we pick up germs.(i.e.: the neighborhood playground, restraunts, shopping centers, shopping carts, our loved ones, etc).
So with that said, we won't know if Everett has RSV; until then we'll keep our fingers crossed his symptoms don't worsen and pray we have two healthy boys very, very soon.

A little more about RSV:
Overview
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a very common virus that leads to mild, cold-like symptoms in adults and older healthy children. It can be more serious in young babies, especially to those in certain high-risk groups.

Symptoms
Bluish skin color due to a lack of oxygen (cyanosis)
Breathing difficulty or labored breathing
Cough
Croupy cough (often described as a "seal bark" cough)
Fever
Nasal flaring
Rapid breathing (tachypnea)
Shortness of breath
Stuffy nose
Wheezing
Note: Symptoms vary and differ with age. Infants under age 1 are most severely affected and often have the most trouble breathing. Older children usually have only mild, cold-like symptoms. Symptoms usually appear 4 - 6 days after coming in contact with the virus.

Treatment
Antibiotics do not treat RSV. Mild infections go away without treatment. Infants and children with a severe RSV infection may be admitted to the hospital so they can receive oxygen, humidified air, and fluids by IV. A breathing machine (ventilator) may be needed.

Causes
RSV is the most common germ that causes lung and airway infections in infants and young children. Most infants have had this infection by age 2. Outbreaks of RSV infections typically begin in the fall and run into the spring.

RSV is spread easily by physical contact. Touching, kissing, and shaking hands with an infected person can spread RSV. The disease spreads from person to person through contact with contaminated tiny droplets or objects that the droplets have touched.

RSV can live for a half an hour or more on hands. The virus can also live for up to 5 hours on countertops and for several hours on used tissues. RSV often spreads very rapidly in crowded households and day care centers.

The infection can occur in people of all ages.

Risks include:
Attending daycare
Being exposed to tobacco smoke
Having school-aged siblings
Living in crowded conditions

When to contact a doctor
Call your health care provider if breathing difficulties or other symptoms of this disorder appear. Any breathing difficulties in an infant are an emergency. Seek medical attention right away.

Grandma Cross' Farm on MLK weekend

Deona and I look forward to MLK weekend each year, as it is the weekend that we visit Grandma Cross on her farm in Oklahoma.

Saturday, we arrived to the smells of a delicious lunch cooking in Grandma's kitchen. Aunt Deanna (Grammy's sister) and Grandma welcomed us with a warm, delicious meal. Later, cousin Lisa and her crew Micaela, Ryan and Brynn stopped in to visit. Everett had sooo much fun playing with Ryan and Brynn.

Brynn & Ev taking a break from their game of "Chase".

On Sunday, we drove in to Perkins, a tiny town where Grammy grew up; then to Stillwater to fabric shop for the quilt Grandma is making Emilia.

Everett & Grammy exploring Grandma's farm:

Ev trying to get a closer look at the cows.

Grammy and Ev playing "Chase" around the tree.

Grammy and Ev had so much fun exploring the farm. Grammy shared a story where she followed Everett along the farm fence line. Apparently, Everett was searching for a way to get around to the other side. After walking for some time, their fence intersected another, keeping them from walking any further. Grammy said Everett "threw his arms up", as if he were saying, "what now" then turned around. :)
Thank you Grandma for a really nice visit. We hope to see you again very soon.

Not Eating & Gaining Weight?

Sounds like a nightmare, doesnt it? It's true, Everett doesn't care to eat, so Mommy eats what he leaves on his plate. Check out this amazing blog: 2 Moms it can be done; these moms are with it! 26 Weeks!

According to ParentsConnect.com, air sacks are developing in baby's lungs, which means it just might be possible for baby to take a breath at the end of this week. The air sacks (technically called alveoli) will continue to grow for the next nine years. The membrane that keeps the alveoli separate from the blood vessels is now thin enough to allow for that oxygen–carbon dioxide exchange we call breathing. Other highlights this week:
The retina completes the development of its normal layers this week—all the better to see you with. Well not you, per se, because her eyes are still sealed shut and it's really dark in there, but your baby's eyes are now fully developed.
Brainwaves for the auditory and visual systems are detectable in baby's noggin this week. That means baby's brain is registering things like sound and light. She can't understand what any of it means yet, but she's on track to comprehend an entire episode of Blue's Clues in no time!
As hearing continues to develop, your baby will start to recognize your voice. Baby will also start to recognize your partner's voice. S/he may feel silly talking to your stomach, but assure her that somebody other than you is definitely listening. Research has shown that newborns actually recognize familiar sounds after birth. Proof that your baby has been paying attention all along.
Break out the sparkling apple juice—baby has now completed two-thirds of her stay in Hotel Womb. Your baby is about 1 2/3 pounds and is 14 inches long head-to-heel, or about the length of a burp cloth (otherwise known as your primary wardrobe accessory for the next several months).

Two things

There are two things Everett must have at bedtime...
his blankie and Pooh bear. Tonight Everett used Pooh bear for his pillow.

Thanks Gramma and Grampa for giving Everett his best friend. :)
We're hoping we get to see Pooh & friends again this year in Disney World.

Designing = My Happy Place.

So we move, in less than a month which means I have lots and lots to prepare for, including decorating two bedrooms. Everett will be transitioning into a toddler bed and Emilia will be using the crib and matching furniture.
Both Deona and I agreed on a theme, so I've been busy getting all my ideas down on paper. Sometimes I really regret not finishing my Interior Design degree...this type of "work" makes me happy.

(click on photos for a closer look)

Everett got this race car bed for Christmas, he can hardly wait to use it.
Tick tock, tick tock.....Only 25 days until we move and approximately 12 weeks until Emi is here! *biting nails* Wish me Luck!!!

No more bottles!

I like having this blog. It not only serves as a way to share news with family and friends, but also allows us to keep records of important milestones for our children. Today, I am posting for no other reason than that.
For the past several months Everett has had one bottle at bedtime and the very occassional "emergency- the world is coming to an end" bottle. So with a few days shy of 18 months old, Everett had his last bottle at bedtime on December 7th (also Grampy's birthday). In comparison, I'd say the bottle was tons harder to come off of, than the pacifier...thank goodness THAT happened at 9 months and we're not having to deal with that as well.

Balloons, Bellies & Bunuelos....

...It must be New Year's Eve! :)

Grampy teaching Ev how to blow on a party favor.

Deona & Sharon learn how to roll, make and eat bunuelos, a New Year's tradition for my family.
After dessert, we played a Scrabble and Mexican Train dominoes.
We paused our game to watch the ball drop in Time Square.
"3,2,1....

Happy New Year!!!
Best wishes for health, peace, joy and happiness in 2010!
